The Legal Aid Society of Northeastern New York, a nonprofit civil legal services program, is seeking a Paralegal/Nutrition Outreach and Education Program Coordinator. Paralegal/Nutrition Outreach and Education Program Coordinator serving Albany County. The Legal Aid Society of Northeastern New York, Inc.'s (LASNNY) Nutrition Outreach and Education Program currently covers four counties, each with its own Paralegal / Coordinator, and is designed to increase awareness of and participation in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly known as food stamps) and child nutrition programs. In doing so, the Paralegal/Coordinator plays an essential role in combating hunger in our community. The Program Coordinator will have an office in LASNNY's Albany office and will serve Albany County.
The Program Coordinator will prescreen individuals for potential SNAP eligibility, assist households in completing the SNAP application process and/or maintaining their benefits, help reduce or eliminate barriers to participation in SNAP, refer clients to other community resources, and refer to other LASNNY staff for full representation and wrap-around services as needed. The Program Coordinator will have an office in LASNNY's Albany office and will develop and distribute written materials about SNAP; conduct outreach and educational presentations to low-income individuals, community agencies and the general public; and connect with other community groups serving potential SNAP recipients or providing food or feeding services in Albany County. Responsible for detailed grant reporting. Regular travel, and limited evening/weekend hours are required.
Minimum Requirements
- Attention to detail, good judgment, and a demonstrated commitment to the low-income community.
- Hard-working, careful, reliable, organized, and compassionate.
- Ability to communicate effectively with clients and staff and work well as part of a team.
- Relevant experience, paralegal certificate, or college degree.
- A car and a clean, valid driver's license
- Good computer skills.
- Strong preference for candidate who is fluent in Spanish.
- Previous relevant experience, including experience with the SNAP program or media/communication activities, and/or B.A. degree is preferred.
Staff Attorney Essential Duties
The Paralegal/Nutrition Outreach and Education Coordinator will inform and educate Albany County residents about SNAP and child nutrition programs and assist potential SNAP recipients, especially elders and the working poor. The Coordinator is expected to make use of social media channels such as Zoom/GoToMeeting, Facebook Live or Facebook Chat.
Work Environment
LASNNY is a professional law office and occasionally may require the carrying of items of up to 20 pounds. This role requires the use of standard office equipment and software and remote videoconferencing platforms.
