DEI Manager

Position Description

LawNY® is seeking applicants for a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Manager position. The manager, in collaboration with LawNY®’s DEI committee and management team will be responsible for shaping the direction of the organization’s diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts, pushing forward internal policy initiatives and working to shift organizational culture in a way that maximizes equity.

 

This will include developing, implementing and overseeing a meaningful diversity, equity and inclusion training curriculum at LawNY® and collaborating with other staff to bring an anti-racist, anti-oppressive lens to all of LawNY® 's training. Given the pervasiveness of white supremacy culture in law firms, including public interest law firms, the DEI manager will fulfill the critical need to initiate substantial, sustainable and ongoing training across all levels of the organization.This position will ensure that training programs within LawNY® are designed to help facilitate the cultural changes necessary to underpin successful policy change.

 

The DEI Manager will recommend policy changes generated from current and future organizational equity audits and climate surveys. They will work closely with human resources, management and administrators  to develop, coordinate and train staff and LawNY®’s board on DEI concepts and new policies and protocols. 

 

The DEI manager will identify and support professional development opportunities for staff, in particular for BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and People of Color) staff and other staff historically excluded from leadership, mentorship and advancement. Additionally, they will collaborate on a priority setting process every three years to gather and interpret data on LawNY® 's service efficacy for underserved demographics. This person will lead internal communications on the organization's race equity work. Additionally they will provide collaborative facilitation, operating support, and professional development for LawNY®’s staff-led diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) Committee, DEI steering committee, work groups and caucuses.

 

This position reports to the Executive Director and maintains program wide involvement in and oversight over all of the LawNY offices, with the management team. This position can be located in any office.

 

Qualifications These are the basic requirements for the position.

  • Five years of relevant experience, including lived experience, in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, particularly in a community advocacy setting
  • Demonstrated leadership and strategic management skills for initiatives related to equity and social justice
  • Knowledge of core diversity concepts including power and privilege, white supremacy culture, implicit bias and the dynamics of systemic oppression.
  • Fluency implementing training curricula related to diversity, equity and inclusion. Preferably experience with training trainers in facilitating identity conversations.
  • Proven ability to build relationships at all levels of the organization.
  • Demonstrated competency to navigate ambiguity and discomfort at the personal and

group level in order to advance racial justice

 

Responsibilities: These are the most significant responsibilities and primary functions of the positions:

Training and Operations

  • Bring technical knowledge of training and professional development best practices to create and deliver a coordinated DEI curriculum and increase competency for performing core job skills through a race equity lens for staff, management and board members
  • Build the capacity of staff DEI leaders and DEI committee members to conduct

internal DEI work and identify external resources to support a consistent and

sustained DEI program.

  • Foster an organizational culture that centers equity considerations when implementing new policies and serve as the primary resource for staff and the board of directors to consult on equity issues before changing, developing and implementing policy.
  • Develop and implement data collection, analysis and metrics for assessing the effectiveness of internal inclusion initiatives.
  • Manage and facilitate regular equity assessments of internal policies to ensure alignment with current DEI best practices in legal aid organizations.
  • Ensure and enforce compliance with newly adopted race equity policies and practices changes including but not limited to the areas of:
    • Recruitment, Hiring, Onboarding and Retention
    • Supervision, leadership development and mentoring
    • Grievances, discrimination and harassment if related to DEI.
  • Lead an annual salary placement audit to assess equity in staff compensation.

 

DEI Committee Facilitation

  • Facilitate, support and coordinate the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee and subcommittees including the Black, Indigenous and People of Color Caucus, and the White Anti-Racism Caucus.
  • Develop a DEI budget during annual budget cycle planning.
  • Serve as an internal point of contact for DEI projects and communications.
  • Facilitate the DEI Committee to produce communications, presentations and

reports on progress and trends in DEI work.

While no one candidate will possess all of the requirements listed, the ideal candidates will have many of the following qualifications.   • Law, Bachelor’s or Social Services degree
  • Advanced knowledge and experience working with a diverse population especially underrepresented and historically marginalized populations and individuals including but not limited to racial and ethnic minorities including African-American, Latinx, Asian American and Pacific Islander and Native American, immigrants, women, LGBTQIA, people with disabilities, religious minorities and veterans.
  • Experience guiding groups through organizational change processes while using setbacks as learning opportunities.
  • Written and oral fluency in a language other than English

 

Salary

A minimum of five years of relevant experience is required for the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Manager position. The salary for a person with five years of relevant experience is $77,500 and the salary for a person with ten years of relevant experience is $85,800 as per the LawNY salary scale. 

 

LawNY® provides an excellent package of fringe benefits including 94% employer paid health insurance with significant HSA contributions, 100% employer paid dental and disability insurance, vision coverage, and $50,000 automatic life insurance as well as generous leave provisions including, in the first year of employment, 20 days of vacation plus 13.5 holidays and two floating holidays.  Employees also receive 12 sick days and five personal days per year. New parents receive 20 days of paid new parent leave.

 

LawNY® is committed to providing a work-life balance to their employees.  We encourage and support a 35 hour work week to ensure our employees have this balance. We also offer a remote work policy where new staff are able to work from home up to 3 days per week during their 6 month probationary period with manager approval, as their work load permits. This increases to 5 days per week once successfully finished with a probationary period with manager approval, as their workload permits.
