OVERVIEW: For more than 50 years, Nassau Suffolk Law Services (NSLS) has been providing free, high quality legal counsel in civil matters when basic human needs are at stake including: eviction and foreclosure prevention, income maintenance, disability, elder law, healthcare, consumer fraud and more. As the only provider of comprehensive civil legal services on Long Island, our services support thousands of poor and low-income families and individuals who cannot afford an attorney. With the gap separating those who can and cannot afford legal representation widening each day, we work to ensure that everyone has equal access to justice, regardless of their ability to pay. NSLS has a staff of nearly one hundred employees situated in three offices across Long Island.
POSITION: Paralegal for assignment to the Housing (Civil) Units in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. The Housing Unit provides legal representation and advice to tenants facing eviction and termination from federally subsidized housing programs.
DUTIES INCLUDE: The paralegals shall assist the Staff Attorneys in the unit in a variety of duties, which include screening potential clients for eligibility for representation, gathering documents from clients to assist in their cases, exchanging client information and materials with the staff attorneys, preparing and maintaining court calendars, maintain client and case data, time records and statistical information in the office’s computerized case management system.
REQUIREMENTS: Nassau Suffolk Law Services is a non-profit organization providing free legal services to low-income households. Paralegal training or college degree or appropriate prior experience. Excellent oral communication and writing skills, proficiency in Microsoft Word and Outlook, strong attention to detail and organizational ability to prioritize and multitask. Demonstrated commitment to the goals and clients of the legal services program. Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish a plus.
SALARY: $37,758.00 (D.O.E. subject to collective bargaining agreement)
