Staff Attorney: Department of Health

Responsibilities:
• Provide representation, including litigation and court appearances, on legal
issues including, but not limited to: family law, matrimonial, debtor/creditor law, housing, healthcare, discrimination, public benefits, HIV confidentiality and disclosure, guardianships, name changes, along with wills and other related end-of-life and advanced-planning instruments
• Conduct client intakes
• Collaborate with VLP’s other DOH-funded Staff Attorney
• Track and report required client and file data in a timely and accurate manner
• Train staff, vendors, and/or subcontractors on HIV confidentiality
• Conduct outreach to social service providers, clients, and organizations that serve people with HIV/AIDS
• Train/supervise student interns
• Monitor and facilitate a supportive services program staffed by a MSW intern
• Coordinate with pro bono attorneys on referred cases
• Some minimal travel in and around Western New York’s eight counties
• Other duties and projects as assigned


Requirements/Skills – Required:
• Admitted to practice law in NY
• Ability to work cooperatively with fellow staff, supervisors, interns, and pro bono attorneys
• The means and willingness to travel. A driver’s license and regular access to a vehicle are required.
• Strong oral and written advocacy skills, as well as strong research skills
• Willingness to work independently while also taking direction and operating as part of a team
• Organizational skills to juggle cases efficiently
• Comfortable presenting to groups


Requirements/Skills – Preferred:
• 1+ years of experience in family law and matrimonial law
• Demonstrated commitment to representing low-income individuals and vulnerable populations
