Staff Attorney: Department of Health (DOH)

Duties/Responsibilities:
• Provide full representation on a variety of legal issues including, but not limited to: family court cases, matrimonial cases, debtor/creditor cases, housing cases, health care cases, discrimination cases, public benefits cases, HIV confidentiality and disclosure, as well as drafting wills, guardianships, and name change petitions
• Conduct client intakes
• Collaborate with the other staff attorney funded under the DOH contract
• Track and report required data about the work in a timely and accurate manner
• Provide trainings on confidentiality requirements
• Conduct outreach to social service providers, organizations that provide services to people with HIV/AIDS, and to clients
• Train/supervise student interns
• Monitor and interact with subcontractors
• Coordinate with pro bono attorneys relating to referred cases
• Most of the work will be in and around the Buffalo area, however, some travel will be required as the work under this contract encompasses the 8 counties of Western New York
• Variety of other duties and projects


Requirements/Skills - Required:
• Admitted to practice law in NY
• Ability to work cooperatively with fellow staff, supervisors, interns, and pro bono attorneys
• The means and willingness to travel (a driver’s license and regular access to a vehicle are required)
• Strong oral and written advocacy skills, as well as strong research skills
• Willingness to work independently while also taking direction and operating as part of a team
• Organizational skills to juggle many cases efficiently
• Must be comfortable making presentations to groups


Requirements/Skills – Preferred:
• 1+ years of experience in family law and matrimonial law
• demonstrated commitment to representing low-income individuals and other vulnerable populations
