SENIOR LEGAL SERVICES STAFF ATTORNEY

 

The Legal Aid Society of Northeastern New York, a nonprofit civil legal services program, is seeking an experienced attorney to provide outreach, community legal education, advice, brief service and legal representation to elders living in Albany County and Rensselaer County.  The position is located in Albany, NY, the state capital, and a lively family friendly city with a reasonable cost of living, excellent quality of life, and easy access to major metropolitan areas as well as year-round outdoor opportunities.

The Senior Legal Services Program Staff Attorney meets seniors in the communities where they live, listens to their problems, and helps to identify issues and possible solutions. We provide a trusted place for seniors to go for free advice and counsel on the legal issues they face. We are an integral part of the legal and human service community and expect this attorney to be deeply involved in the network of  senior service providers in the Capital District.

 

Responsibilities:  

 

The Attorney will be responsible for doing outreach, community legal education, advice, brief service and legal representation to elders living in Albany County and Rensselaer County. Case work for representation to elders will include consumer issues, wills and estates, housing, Social Security Disability, public benefits, including administrative hearings and issues involving elder abuse, grandparents’ rights, Medicare, Medicaid, long term care, nursing homes, EPIC and guardianship. Responsibilities include extensive off-site intake, and monthly demographic and outcome reporting.

 

Qualifications: 3-8 years’ prior legal experience or equivalent.  Admitted to New York State Bar.  Demonstrated commitment to providing high quality legal services to clients in a variety of civil matters.  Possesses curiosity about the law and is interested in or possesses substantive law knowledge of many areas of law. Competent in and enjoys researching new legal issues. Must be able to communicate effectively with clients and staff and work independently and efficiently.  Ability to handle and advise on a wide variety and high volume of civil legal matters. Demonstrated understanding of the needs of the aging population, and excellent listening, communication and organization skills. Must be willing to make a two-year commitment to the Legal Aid Society.   Good computer skills including accurate and quick data entry.  Must have car and clean, valid driver’s license.  Prior relevant legal experience, ability to speak Spanish is a plus. 

 

Salary:    $54,439 – $67,077 DOE; excellent benefits including limited loan repayment assistance for eligible applicants.
