Staff Paralegal

Volunteer Legal Services Project provides free legal help to low-income residents of Monroe County, New York who are facing serious civil legal problems. VLSP coordinates the work of 1,600 pro bono volunteers who donate their time and talent to ensure that low-income people have access to the justice system.

As part of a small team of dedicated legal advocates, the Staff Paralegal will provide support to clients and attorneys in a variety of legal matters. Their duties include answering client telephone calls, screening and interviewing clients, providing legal information and referrals, writing memos for attorneys, and gathering necessary documents and information.  The paralegal tracks the status of cases and referrals, reports data in the case management system, and manages interactions with clients, pro bono attorneys and the courts. This position requires the ability to work independently and exercise sound and compassionate judgment while serving a very diverse clientele that may be in crisis or has endured various forms of trauma. 

Working knowledge of consumer law matters (e.g., foreclosure, unemployment insurance benefits appeals, debtor-creditor matters) strongly preferred.  Prior experience with immigration, family law, landlord-tenant, and/or other civil legal services is also highly desired.

Education/Experience/Skill: A demonstrated commitment to our mission of providing legal assistance to underserved members of the community and the ability to work as part of a team in a client-focused, respectful, and collegial environment are required. A certificate of completion from an approved paralegal program and prior relevant legal experience strongly preferred. Excellent written and oral communication skills, strong time-management skills, interpersonal skills, and the ability to maintain confidentiality of records and information are required. Excellent attention to detail and technical skills relating to database/case management systems and computer software platforms are preferred.   Proficiency in Spanish, ASL, or another language frequently used by VLSP clients is highly desired.  A sense of humor is also helpful.

Salary depends upon prior relevant experience. The work atmosphere is congenial, respectful and flexible. 

This position is not a permanent remote position however, all VLSP staff is currently operating remotely to limit the spread of COVID-19 and ensure the safety of staff and clients. Staff continues to serve clients remotely, or when necessary, in-person, following appropriate safety protocols and procedures as provided by local, state, and federal government agencies.   PPE will be provided by the agency when applicable.
