Under the direction of VLSP’s Managing Attorney, the Family Law Paralegal duties include interviewing clients, writing referral memos, and gathering necessary documents and information needed to open case files for placement with a pro bono attorney for divorce, custody, and support matters. The paralegal tracks the status of cases and referrals, reports data in the case management system, and manages interactions with clients, pro bono attorneys and the courts. This position requires the ability to work independently and exercise sound and compassionate judgment while serving a very diverse clientele that may be in crisis or has endured various forms of trauma. A strong commitment to serving low-income domestic violence victims and survivors and other vulnerable populations is required.
Education/Experience/Skill: Certificate of completion from an approved paralegal program and two (2) years experience in family law and matrimonial law preferred. Excellent written and oral communication skills, strong time-management skills, interpersonal skills, and the ability to maintain confidentiality of records and information. Excellent attention to detail and technical skills relating to database/case management systems and computer software platforms. Commitment to working in a client-focused, respectful, and collegial environment.
