Overview

The Hudson Valley Justice Center (HVJC) is a not-for-profit organization providing high quality direct civil legal services to immigrants so that they may achieve access to justice.  Addressing the unmet civil legal needs of immigrants in the Hudson Valley, HVJC provides comprehensive civil legal services including immigration, housing, public benefits, disability, employment, consumer, and family law. HVJC is an affiliate organization of Legal Services of the Hudson Valley with an office in White Plains. With the gap separating those who can and cannot afford legal representation widening each day, we work to ensure that everyone has equal access to justice, regardless of their ability to pay.

 

Position

HVJC has an immediate opening for a full-time Advocate to work with immigrant victims of crime.  The position will support staff attorneys providing legal assistance to immigrant victims of crime in civil legal matters in Westchester County.

The duties include: screening, intake, outreach and provision of support to staff attorneys providing legal assistance to immigrant victims of crime.  Provision of supportive services, direct contact with clients, and limited case handling under the supervision of an attorney may be required. The person hired will also be expected to adhere to program standards, funder requirements, and the highest professional standards. Furthermore, the ability to travel to various outreach locations in the respective Counties is also expected.

Requirements

  • Associates Degree;
  • Experience and competency with Microsoft Office environment (Word, Excel, Outlook etc.) and ability to input data efficiently into database;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Excellent people skills;
  • Driver's license and transportation (e.g. car).

Preferred

  • Four-year degree;
  • Demonstrated commitment to serving low-income persons with prior experience in legal services, victim advocacy or similar program;
  • English/Spanish bilingual

Salary: Salary in the low 40s with excellent benefits.
