Job description:

The New York Legal Assistance Group seeks candidates for a temporary, full time staff attorney position.  This is a temporary assignment to cover a maternity leave. The ideal candidate will begin work in mid-September 2019 for an approximate six-month term (with possible extension). This position is with our ActionNYC team, which focuses on connecting immigrant communities across New York City to free immigration legal consultations, document preparation, and application assistance.  This position is supervised by NYLAG staff and will work primarily at a community-based organization (CBO) in Queens, primarily serving the Chinese community. This attorney will work closely with a team of two (2) community navigators.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with team of two (2) navigators who will conduct comprehensive immigration legal screenings and provide application assistance to clients eligible for straightforward affirmative relief, including DACA, TPS, naturalization, green card renewals, and others;
  • Oversee the provision of all immigration legal services, including the provision legal advice on eligibility, review of all applications prepared by navigators, and on-going case management and review;
  • Capacity permitting, provide direct representation to clients for more complex forms of immigration relief;
  • Make appropriate referrals of complex cases that are beyond the scope of the ActionNYC initiative to other legal services providers;
  • Participate in ActionNYC trainings and work closely with ActionNYC staff to implement program protocols;
  • Track and report on data to ActionNYC and maintain case information in internal case management system;
  • Participate in large-scale screening events, including supervision of volunteers and staff;
  • Assist with community outreach and know-your-rights workshops to educate immigrant communities about forms of immigration relief; and
  • Other duties and tasks as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Admission to any state bar;
  • 2-3 years of immigration law experience;
  • Fluency in Mandarin and Cantonese preferred but not required;
  • Demonstrated commitment to public interest work;
  • Excellent written, oral and analytical skills;
  • Strong organizational skills;
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently;
