Paralegal, Public Benefits Unit
Job Description: 
NYLAG?s Public Benefits Unit (PBU) has an immediate opening for an Intake Specialist / Paralegal Case Handler. The successful candidate will spend approximately half of their time in each capacity. In the capacity of Intake Specialist, the successful candidate?s primary responsibility will be to field and screen calls from those seeking NYLAG?s legal services in all areas other than family, immigration, housing, and consumer law. These areas include, but are not limited to, government benefits, elder law, and employment law. They will also maintain updated referral sources, databases, and intake guides, as well as provide relevant information to callers.In the capacity of Paralegal Case Handler, the successful candidate will handle cases in which impoverished New Yorkers have been inappropriately denied subsistence government benefits, such as public assistance and SNAP benefits. Specific responsibilities include advocating with government agencies to secure benefits and services, representing clients at administrative hearings, and obtaining relief for individual clients in NYLAG?s public benefits class action cases. Salary range is $42,025 to $48,187, depending on experience. Duties and Responsibilities:  
 
  • Manage, transcribe and distribute intake calls from clients seeking assistance from NYLAG?s Public Benefits Unit
  • Maintain updated intake-tracking spreadsheet, referral sources, databases, and intake guides
  • Return client calls, conduct client intake and make referrals, when necessary
  • Research and analyze regulations, administrative directives and previous Fair Hearing decisions in order to independently handle and advocate for low-income clients
  • Represent clients that have been inappropriately denied Public Assistance, Medicaid and SNAP benefits at administrative Fair Hearings
  • Communicate with the Human Resource Administration and NYC Job Centers to obtain compliance with Fair Hearing decisions and secure Public Assistance, SNAP and Medicaid benefits and services
  • Collect and timely enter data into physical case files and case file management system
  • Obtain relief for individual clients in NYLAG?s public benefits class action cases
  • Interact with a diverse client population in sensitive and professional manner  
  Qualifications:  
 
  • BA/BS or equivalent degree
  • Fluency in Spanish is required
  • Priority will be given to those who have experience working for or with New York City legal or social services organizations
