The Legal Aid Society's Civil Practice has an opening for a Supervising Attorney for the citywide Family/Domestic Violence Unit. This Unit handles family law matters, with an emphasis on complex matrimonial matters, as well as DV immigration related matters and DV consumer matters. The DV portion of the Unit works with DV partner service organizations in the community that together provide holistic civil legal and social services to the most vulnerable DV victims and survivors in each of the five boroughs of New York City. The Supervising Attorney must work closely with the Director of the Family/DV Unit in managing and supervising the Family/DV Unit staff in all boroughs.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
* Manage the day-to-day Family/DV Unit staff attorneys and paralegals in the neighborhood offices
* Represent clients in State and federal court proceedings
* Monitor and maintain a high standard of representation and client service
* Maintain a reasonable individual caseload
* Assist with writing grant proposals and reports
* Develop impact and/or affirmative litigation
* Support the development, funding, implementation, and reporting of programs
* Coordinate intake
* Assist with database management
* Provide oversight of pro bono initiatives
* Respond to client, community, and staff concerns
* Evaluate Practice needs and identify necessary resources to address the needs
* Analyze legal issues, develop legal strategy, and supervise the implementation of legal strategies
* Prepare and submit necessary grant reporting paperwork
* Assist with planning and conducting citywide and statewide coalition meetings and task forces
* Foster and encourage teamwork and communication
* Reinforce and maintain staff accountability
* Mentor and train staff
* Evaluate conflicting demands and prioritize workload
* Develop and maintain community support and relationships with community-based organizations, advocates, government agencies, elected officials, and the courts
* Represent the Family/DV Unit, the Civil Practice, and Legal Aid in the community
* Promote the work of the Family/DV Unit
* Conduct community education, training, and outreach and promote the work of the office, the unit, and the Civil Practice
* Conduct off-site intake, including during evening hours as needed
