Criminal Defense Practice Staff Attorney Immigration Specialist

The Legal Aid Society's Immigration Law Unit is seeking two Staff Attorneys to serve as Immigration Specialists for the Criminal Defense Practice. The attorney will work collaboratively with existing Immigration Specialists and other staff in both the Civil Practice Immigration Law Unit and the Criminal Defense Practice offices to enhance legal services to non-citizen clients of the Criminal Defense Practice. The Immigration Specialist will be trained and supervised by the Civil Practice Immigration Law Unit, but will be based in a Criminal Defense office.

The Immigration Law Unit (ILU) is a recognized leader in the delivery of high quality legal services to immigrants in New York City and surrounding counties. The unit provides low-income New Yorkers with free, comprehensive immigration services ranging from removal defense to applications for various forms of immigration status. The ILU specializes in the intersection between immigration and criminal law, and works collaboratively with all practice areas to serve The Legal Aid Society's diverse immigrant clients through a comprehensive service model. ILU staff members represent immigrants before U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), the Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR), and in state and federal courts.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
* Consult with non-citizen clients and their attorneys on the potential immigration consequences of their criminal cases
* Conduct outreach and training on criminal-immigration issues and emergent trends
* Represent Criminal Defense Practice clients before USCIS on affirmative applications and in removal proceedings before the Immigration Courts, the Board of Immigration Appeals, and in federal court proceedings
* Represent clients in state court proceedings
* Engage in affirmative litigation
* Engage in policy advocacy on behalf of clients

SECONDARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
* Other duties as assigned
* This position may require evening hours

Requirements

* New York State Bar admission
* Minimum of three years' experience in New York criminal defense practice or at the intersection of immigration and criminal law
* Excellent research, writing, analytical, oral advocacy and organizational skills
* Interest in developing new approaches to representing clients with immigration issues 
* Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team and to manage challenging, varied and complex cases
* Proficiency in languages other than English is desirable, but not required.
