Civil Practice Staff Attorney - Employment Law Unit

The Legal Aid Society's Civil Practice has two Staff Attorney positions available in the citywide Employment Law Unit. The Employment Law Unit represents low-wage and unemployed workers on a wide range of employment-related problems including unpaid wages, minimum and overtime wage violations, discrimination, family and medical leave violations, labor trafficking, and unemployment insurance. It works closely with numerous community-based organizations that serve immigrant and low wage workers.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

* Client representation in state and federal court proceedings and affirmative litigation
* Client representation and advocacy with local, state, and federal agencies
* Training, community outreach, and education for individuals, local community-based organizations, and low-wage worker advocates
* Policy advocacy on behalf of clients
* Conduct off-site community outreach and intake, including during evening hours
* Handling a high volume of helpline calls from individuals and community-based advocates, and a high volume of individual cases
* Working with pro bono lawyers and law students

SECONDARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

* Other duties as assigned

Requirements

* Admission to New York State Bar
* Experience preferred; favorable consideration will be given to attorneys who have familiarity with employment law issues
* Experience assisting people in crisis is desirable
* Excellent written and oral advocacy skills
* Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team and manage a high volume of cases and projects
* Ability to work with pro bono lawyers, law students, and community advocates
* Excellent organizational skills
* Proficiency in languages other than English is desirable, but not required
