Criminal Defense Practice Supervising Attorney - CAB

The Legal Aid Society, the largest social justice legal services organization in New York City, has an immediate opening for a dedicated and passionate Supervising Attorney in our Criminal Appeals Bureau. The Criminal Appeals Bureau is the largest post-conviction public defender in New York City, annually providing holistic, client-centered representation to over 1,000 people with misdemeanor, felony, and homicide convictions. The Supervising Attorney is on the front lines providing high-quality, zealous representation to the clients of the organization. She will work alongside staff to provide direct representation to clients, as well as assist the organization in setting reform policies that better the lives of clients and communities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
The Supervising Attorney leads dedicated and dynamic teams of attorneys, who, along with paralegals, a social worker, and other staff, represent the clients of the Criminal Appeals Bureau. She directly mentors, trains, and supervises staff in the daily provision of zealous representation. Duties include, but are not limited to, guiding staff attorneys and pro bono volunteer lawyers in all facets of post-conviction representation: record review, issue selection and appellate brief writing; conceptualization, preparation and execution of other post-conviction motions, including motions to vacate convictions under CPL Sec. 440.10 and motions to vacate unlawful sentences under CPL Sec. 440.20; preparation for and conduct of Sex Offender Registration hearings and Sex Offender Risk-Level Modification petitions; and preparation of Gubernatorial pardon and clemency applications. The Supervising Attorney also has significant administrative responsibilities monitoring staff attorney productivity and otherwise assisting staff attorneys in the management of large and complex post-conviction caseloads. The Supervising Attorney also leads trainings for new and more experienced legal and non-legal staff. Finally, the Supervising Attorney generally carries a small caseload of her own. The ideal candidate is a motivated leader who will consciously create and enhance a diverse workplace culture that is supportive, collaborative and affirming to our clients and colleagues. This individual will coach, mentor and develop all staff to advance their professional development and growth.

Requirements

* New York State Bar admission (or ability to waive into New York State from another jurisdiction)
* At least 5 years of demonstrated commitment to public defense, social and racial justice, and equity
* Significant experience in all aspects of criminal post-conviction representation
* Excellent research, writing, brief-writing, and oral argument skills
* Comprehensive knowledge of relevant New York State and federal law including evidence laws, criminal and constitutional laws, statutory interpretation, and ethical principles contained in the Rules of Professional Conduct
* Excellent interpersonal coaching and development skills 
* Excellent organizational, case management, and strategic planning skills
* Demonstrated ability to lead and develop a team of attorneys with varying experience levels
* Ability to challenge others to seek innovative and creative approaches to advocacy and to provide effective performance feedback and evaluation to encourage ongoing development
