Civil Practice Staff Attorney (NYCHA)

The Legal Aid Society's Civil Practice is seeking a Staff Attorney for the Water Street Office or the Brooklyn Neighborhood Office. The Staff Attorney focuses on public housing termination hearings and provides representation to public housing residents facing termination of their tenancy. In the first year, these cases will all be for families where the head of household is over 62 years old. These cases can be from any borough. The Staff Attorney works closely with the Law Reform Unit's NYCHA Paralegal Casehandler, who does initial intakes at the NYCHA termination of tenancy location and represents tenants on cases which can be handled by a paralegal. The Staff Attorney also works closely with Law Reform Unit staff who are working on affirmative public housing issues. The position may require working at any location where NYCHA termination of tenancy hearings are held or at Water Street or any of the BNO locations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

* Provide advice and assistance to clients
* Interview clients, review case records, and represent clients in administrative proceedings
* Provide brief service on behalf of clients before government agencies
* Conduct factual and legal research
* Participate in client outreach efforts
* Develop community education materials and conduct trainings for clients and other advocates 
* Carry out other tasks of general assistance to the NYCHA work of the Civil Housing Practice
* Conduct off-site intake as needed, including during evening hours
* Assist with complying with grant requirements

Requirements

* Admission to the New York State Bar
* Experience in and/or commitment to advocacy on behalf of low-income people and immigrants is strongly desired
* Experience assisting people in crisis is desirable but not required
* Excellent written, oral advocacy, and computer skills 
* Excellent organizational skills and ability to multi-task
* Ability to work independently as well as in a team and to manage a large workload
* Ability to coordinate and collaborate successfully with other groups and organizations
* Proficiency in languages other than English, especially Spanish, is desirable but not required
