NYLAG has an immediate opening for a staff attorney for the Legal Hand
Project located in Crown Height, Brooklyn. Legal Hand is a walk-in legal
information and resource office with five locations throughout New York
City. It is a project of the Center for Court Innovation (CCI), and
NYLAG partners to provide an onsite attorney to the Crown Heights
office. The attorney selected for this position will train and supervise
non-lawyer volunteers to provide high quality information about the
legal system so that community members are better able to understand
their issues, the legal systems that affect them, and any alternatives
to court. In conjunction with a CCI Volunteer Coordinator, the NYLAG
staff attorney will train and supervise the project volunteers to, among
other things: issue spot; understand whether an issue is amenable to
court resolution; consider the alternatives to litigation, such as
mediation; identify legal and non-legal resources; locate available
legal information including on LawHelp.org; understand the various court
processes and how to navigate them; and complete court DIY forms. The
attorney will provide legal advice to community members as
necessary.Applicants should demonstrate a strong commitment to public
interest law and should have excellent written and analytic abilities.

variety of practice areas and with staff at CCI
