Civil Practice Staff Attorney - Elder Law

The Legal Aid Society's Civil Practice has an opening for one Staff Attorney in the Elder Law Practice Assigned Counsel Project to provide legal assistance to seniors in Bronx County Housing Court who are at risk of eviction. The position involves the handling of a broad range of civil legal services for senior citizens, with a primary emphasis on housing (especially Rent Control/Rent Stabilization and government housing subsidy issues) and government benefits (such as Social Security/SSI disability and non-disability issues, Medicaid, Medicare, home care, SCRIE/DRIE, public assistance, and adult protective services) as well as consumer law, guardianship, and advance directives.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

* Client representation in city, state, and federal court proceedings and administrative hearings 
* Client representation and advocacy with city, state, and federal agencies
* Home visits to homebound seniors
* Training, community outreach, and education for individuals, local community-based organizations, and the elderly at senior citizen centers
* Policy advocacy on behalf of clients
* Coordination and collaborative work with other groups and organizations
* Work with pro bono lawyers
* Represent the Civil Practice and The Legal Aid Society in the community
* Conduct community education, training, and outreach and promote the work of the office, the Elder Law Practice, and the Civil Practice
* May be asked to serve non-elderly clients 
* Conduct off-site intake, including during evening hours

Requirements

* Admission to New York State Bar or eligible for immediate waiver
* Experience practicing housing law or working with the elderly is preferred 
* Excellent written and oral advocacy skills are required
* Understanding of and sensitivity to the needs of mentally and physically impaired elderly clients 
* Ability to work independently and collaboratively, including with other groups and organizations
* Ability to manage a high volume of cases
* Demonstrated commitment and experience in public interest law and civil legal services
* Excellent organizational skills
* Proficiency in languages other than English is desirable, but not required
