This Project advances the
state's Justice For All initiative,
to provide effective legal assistance to those facing challenges involving the
essentials of life (e.g. housing, family matters, access to health care,
education, immigration and subsistence income).
The Community Legal Help Project, created by the NYS Permanent
Commission on Access to Justice and the Suffolk County Access to Justice Committee,
is a unique pilot project that brings legal assistance to Suffolk County neighborhoods,
starting with libraries and expanding to social service centers and other
sites. The Project will provide legal services professionals to assist eligible
residents with legal questions or needs.
This is an opportunity to
be part of team which will design and develop a new and innovative approach to
the provision of effective legal assistance.
The attorney will coordinate the efforts of pro bono attorneys, law
students and legal services providers to provide basic information and
referrals, limited-scope representation, informational services and
presentations - in person, remotely, and online. The attorney will also be expected to help
recruit volunteers and develop and implement outreach efforts and publicity for
the Project. The position, while based
in Islandia, NY, will involve significant time spent at other geographical
locations in the county.
