The Legal Aid Society, the largest social justice legal services organization in New York City, has immediate openings for dedicated and passionate Supervising Attorneys in our Criminal Defense Practice's Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, and Staten Island trial offices. The Criminal Defense Practice is the primary public defender in New York City, providing holistic, client-centered representation to over 200,000 people facing misdemeanor, felony, and homicide charges. The Supervising Attorneys are on the front lines providing high quality, zealous representation to the clients of the organization. They work alongside staff to provide direct representation to clients, as well as assist the organization in setting reform policies that better the lives of clients and communities.
The Supervising Attorneys lead a dedicated and dynamic team of attorneys, investigators and paralegals who represent the clients of the Criminal Defense Practice. They directly mentor, train, and supervise staff in the daily provision of zealous representation. Duties include, but are not limited to, observing hearings and trials, training new lawyers and law students, second-chairing hearings and trials, and evaluating client services. Supervising Attorneys generally carry a small caseload. The ideal candidate is a motivated leader who will consciously create and enhance a diverse workplace culture that is supportive, collaborative and affirming to our clients and colleagues. This individual will coach, mentor and develop all staff to advance their professional development and growth.
