Experienced Criminal Defense/Appellate Attorney - Appeals Program

The Hiscock Legal Aid Society, Syracuse, New York, a nonprofit legal aid organization, seeks an experienced and talented attorney committed to indigent defense for its Appeals Program. The Society is the appellate defender for Onondaga County, providing representation in criminal and family court appeals to the Fourth Department and Court of Appeals. The attorney will staff a new Appeals Consultation Project, and will serve as an appellate specialist providing support and counsel to trial-level attorneys.  

 The attorney will be expected to collaborate with trial attorneys to analyze legal issues and develop legal strategy, assist with trial preparation, appear in court for hearings and trials, and provide training on timely legal and forensic issues. The attorney may also carry a small appeals caseload. 

 The ideal candidate will be dynamic and able to work as part of a team. Minimum of 7 to 10 years' experience handling felony-level criminal trials and/or appeals required. Excellent analytical, research, writing, oral advocacy, and interpersonal skills are required. Admission to the New York State Bar is required.

 Salary: DOE. Excellent benefits.
