STAFF ATTORNEY: Nassau/Suffolk Law Services has an opening for a staff attorney in
its Education and Disability Rights
Project (EDRP). This position involves
direct representation of income eligible individuals with disabilities in a
variety of areas, including special education (students age 5-21), and the
appeal of adverse eligibility decisions pertaining to disability related
services/programs such as the Consumer Directed Personal Assistance Program
(CDPAP), and programs funded by the Office of People With Developmental
Disabilities (OPWDD). The attorney in
this unit will also assist homeless students in education-related matters,
represent students at residency hearings and in disciplinary matters, represent
adults with disabilities in securing appropriate residential placements and
supports, and will provide short term advice and counsel.
The Staff Attorney will attend Committee on Special
Education (CSE) meetings, building level school meetings, Resolution Sessions
and Impartial Hearings, will represent at hearings before the Department of
Social Services, will draft Due Process Complaints, appeals to the New York
Education Department Office of State Review and the New York State Commissioner
of Education, Article 78 petitions, Appellate Division appeals and federal
litigation papers.

SALARY: $50,250 D.O.E.
REQUIREMENTS:
Admission to the New York State Bar.
Applicants who passed the Bar Examination and are pending admission will
be considered. Experience and/or
interest in educational systems is desirable.
Bilingual proficiency in Spanish and English will be viewed favorably. Strong analytical and writing skills are
essential.
