Paralegal/Housing Counselor
LASMNY seeks a Paralegal/Housing Counselor for its Homeownership Protection Program (HOPP), which provides foreclosure prevention services to low and moderate income households in the following counties in upstate New York: Broome, Chenango, Delaware, Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis, Madison, Oneida and Otsego. The Paralegal/Housing Counselor will provide foreclosure prevention counseling services to clients facing foreclosure at all stages of the process, from pre-foreclosure notices to the auction stage. Job duties include: coordinating client foreclosure intake; triaging clients for appointment scheduling; creating client files and inputting data into case management system; determining clients' objectives, goals and needs; developing an action plan to achieve set goals; providing foreclosure prevention counseling; referring cases to HOPP attorneys in-house for court-related assistance; preparing/submitting loss mitigation packets and following up with client, financial institutions, loan servicers, escalators and other providers as necessary; accompanying LASMNY HOPP attorneys to court settlement conferences as needed; and counseling clients regarding transition options. The Paralegal/Housing Counselor will be based in LASMNY's Binghamton office, but will travel to the other counties served by LASMNY's HOPP program as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree or associate's degree in related field. Knowledge of and experience related to the topics of homeownership, credit/housing counseling, lending, and foreclosure prevention counseling. Minimum 2-3 years of experience in foreclosure prevention counseling, including: conducting initial client interviews; assisting clients to gather documentation needed for loss mitigation; preparing client action plans; preparing and submitting loss mitigation packets to financial institutions and loan servicers; following up with financial institutions, loan servicers, escalators and others to maximize positive loss mitigation outcomes; and counseling clients about transition options. Must have completed the Foreclosure Intervention and Default Counseling Certification program through NeighborWorks America. Proficiency in use of Hope Loan Port required. Ability to develop and maintain a cooperative and team-oriented working relationship with a wide range of people, including other employees, real estate professionals, financial institutions, escalators, volunteers, and others. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Some travel required to meet with clients and accompany LASMNY attorneys to court-mandated settlement conferences throughout LASMNY's HOPP service area.
