Civil Practice Temporary Supervising Attorney

The Legal Aid Society's Civil Practice is seeking an experienced and talented lawyer with a deep commitment to public interest practice and policy to join a dedicated citywide team as a Temporary Supervising Attorney in the Queens Neighborhood Office. The Temporary Supervising Attorney will share responsibility for the supervision of the Citywide Foreclosure Prevention and Equity Preservation Unit for three months, with incremental three-month renewals up to one year. This unit provides comprehensive legal services to homeowners and challenges predatory lending and real estate abuses through affirmative litigation.

The Temporary Supervising Attorney must work closely and share responsibilities with the Supervising Attorney of the Foreclosure Prevention and Equity Preservation Unit. Although based in the Queens Neighborhood Office, the Temporary Supervising Attorney will have citywide responsibilities for the Practice including visiting other Civil Practice Offices as needed.

Following the conclusion of this assignment, the Temporary Supervising Attorney may apply for an open Supervising Attorney position in the Civil Practice.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
*Supervise and mentor staff attorneys, paralegals, and volunteers, and coordinate intake
*Participate in Practice-wide management discussions and decision-making
*Represent clients in State and federal court proceedings
*Monitor and maintain a high standard of representation and client service
*Maintain a reasonable individual caseload
*Develop impact and/or affirmative litigation
*Assist with the development, funding, and implementation of grants, including the preparation of grant reports 
*Provide oversight of pro bono initiatives 
*Respond to client, community, and staff concerns
*Evaluate Practice needs and identify necessary resources to address such needs
*Analyze legal issues, develop legal strategy, and supervise the implementation of legal strategies
*Participate in citywide and statewide coalition meetings and task forces, including developing and leading new initiatives on legislative and policy matters
*Foster and encourage teamwork and communication
*Reinforce and maintain staff accountability
*Develop and maintain support and relationships with community-based organizations, advocates, government agencies, elected officials, and the courts
*Conduct community education, training, and outreach and promote the work of the office, the Foreclosure Prevention Unit, and the Civil Practice 
*Conduct off-site intake, including during evening hours


SECONDARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
*Other duties as assigned

REQUIREMENTS

* Admission to the NYS Bar
* Minimum of three years of legal practice preferred
* Experience in all aspects of foreclosure prevention work
* Experience litigating in various forums, including State and federal courts
* Excellent litigation skills and experience litigating individual and group cases
* Excellent oral and written advocacy skills 
* Demonstrated commitment to and experience in public interest law and civil legal services
* Demonstrated commitment to policy advocacy and administrative reform
* Experience supervising and mentoring others
* Experience in grant writing and reporting
* Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills
* Commitment to exploring alternative approaches for legal practice
* Commitment to working in a collaborative team model 
* Proficiency in languages other than English is desirable, but not required
