Civil Practice Paralegal I-Manhattan and Brooklyn
JOB DESCRIPTION
The Legal Aid Society has Paralegal I positions available to support the Civil Practice in the Water Street and Livingston Street offices. The Paralegal I position provides client services and ensures that clients seeking assistance receive access to available client services, or if applicable, referral to the appropriate outside agencies. In addition, the Paralegal I position handles a wide range of tasks that support the office. The Paralegal I position may also have occasional duties at other Legal Aid Society offices or intake sites.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
* Answer client telephone inquiries and handle basic correspondence
* Staff office point-of-entry telephone and telephone helpline for clients
* Schedule appointments and interview clients and family members
* Interact with clients and assist clients in completing forms and releases
* Refer clients, when applicable, to outside agencies and services
* Handle intakes from members of the public who contact the office requesting legal assistance
* Perform administrative tasks during intakes
* Enter and search data on various databases
* Generate daily, weekly, and monthly reports from various databases as needed
* Maintain and update case management database
* Draft, file, and serve subpoenas and other legal documents
* Obtain and copy court and office files
* Perform basic legal research and check citations
* Backup and support other administrative staff
* Assist in oral and written translation as needed
* Create case files
* Copy, collate, and batch documents
* Assist with court fillings
* Conduct off-site work as needed

SECONDARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
* Other duties as assigned
REQUIREMENTS

* GED, high school diploma, four years of responsible work experience, or some combination of these is required
* One year of experience in a legal or other relevant work (paid or unpaid) environment is preferred
* Proficiency in Spanish is required
* Strong writing, verbal, and organization skills
* Proficiency in word processing and strong computer skills
* Ability to learn and efficiently use new systems
* Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
* Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively on a team
* Some relevant college level work and/or paralegal training preferred
* Ability to work flexible hours, including nights and/or weekends 
* Experience in and/or commitment to advocacy on behalf of low-income people is strongly desired
