Albany Law School's Government Law Center seeks an attorney to staff its
Rural Law Initiative, providing legal-advocacy services to clients in selected
rural communities in upstate New York, with an emphasis on serving small
businesses, rural cooperatives, and other entities engaged in rural community development. The attorney will be responsible for a
variety of projects including: engaging in limited direct representation of
small-business clients; developing and delivering educational programs; producing
studies, reports, articles, and memoranda for publication; connecting clients
to appropriate sources of assistance; developing resources to support rural
legal practitioners; and matching law students with legal practitioners and
judges in rural New York through a variety of experiential opportunities. The
successful candidate will demonstrate strong legal and public-policy analysis
and research and writing skills. Candidates must have a J.D. degree and either
be admitted to the NYS Bar or be eligible for admission. 1-5 years of practical legal experience is
required (student work in a law clinic counts toward that requirement); experience
in law related to community development, or issues affecting small businesses, is
desirable but not required. The position involves regular day-travel to selected
surrounding counties. Applicants
should submit a cover letter, resume and a writing sample that reflects the
candidate's ability to draft a law and policy paper.
