Staff Attorney - Disability Advocacy Project (DAP)

LEGAL AID SOCIETY OF NORTHEASTERN NEW YORK

DISABILITY ADVOCACY PROJECT (DAP) STAFF ATTORNEY

 

Responsibilities:  The Attorney will primarily be responsible for providing legal representation and assistance in Social Security disability and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) claims Responsibilities include representation in court and administrative proceedings; legal advice and brief services to clients; client legal education and in-service training to human service providers on legal issues; and case reporting and outcome reporting to grant funders.

 

Qualifications: 1-9 years prior legal experience or equivalent. Admitted to New York State Bar.  Demonstrated commitment to providing high quality legal services to clients. Must be willing to make a two year commitment to the Legal Aid Society.  Must be able to communicate effectively with clients and staff, and work independently and efficiently.  Good computer skills including accurate and quick data entry.  Must have car and clean, valid driver's license.  Prior relevant legal experience in Social Security Administration disability representation and the ability to speak Spanish are helpful. 

 

Program Profile:  The Legal Aid Society is a publicly funded law firm which provides free civil legal services to low-income individuals.  This position is in our main office in Albany.  The Albany office serves low income individuals in Albany, Schenectady, Rensselaer, Columbia and Greene Counties.

 

Salary:  $46,307 to $63,927  Unionized program, with excellent fringe benefits.  May be eligible for Loan Repayment Assistance Program.
