The Housing Unit represents tenants facing eviction and
those who are terminated from or denied access to federally subsidized housing
benefits. The staff attorney will represent clients in summary eviction
proceedings and at administrative hearings before Public Housing Agencies to
contest terminations and denials in federally subsidized housing programs.
Appellate work will be part of the practice, as will the opportunity
to bring affirmative actions in State Supreme and Federal District Courts on
behalf of clients under State and Federal anti-discrimination laws enacted to
protect our clients' housing rights. The staff attorney will also provide
advice and counsel to members of our client community, and will be asked to
engage in community outreach. The staff attorney's duties will include
maintaining client and case data, time records and statistical information in
the office's computerized case management system.
Requirements: Nassau/Suffolk
Law Services is a non-profit organization providing free legal services to
low-income households. Applicants are expected to bring a commitment to the practice
of civil rights for the client population we serve. Admission to the New York
State Bar, or applicants who have passed the Bar Examination, awaiting
admission, is necessary. Bilingual, Spanish and English, is a plus.
SALARY: $50,250 D.O.E.
