Founded in 1990, the New York Legal Assistance Group provides free civil legal services to low-income New Yorkers. The agency serves immigrants, seniors, the homebound, families facing foreclosure, renters facing eviction, low-income consumers, those in need of government assistance, children in need of special education, domestic violence victims, persons with disabilities, patients with chronic illness or disease, low-wage workers, low-income members of the LGBTQ community, Holocaust survivors, and others in need. The agency's annual cash budget is approximately $23 million. Serving more than 75,000 New Yorkers annually, New York Legal Assistance Group maintains a paid staff of approximately 240, supported by 1,200 pro bono attorneys and other volunteers and interns. Job description:

Seeking attorneys committed to protecting immigrant's rights. LegalHealth received a major grant from the City to expand its immigration work. LegalHealth, a division of the New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG), is hiring staff attorneys with demonstrated commitment to public interest law and in particular interest and experience in working with this City's immigrant community.Such attorneys are needed now more than ever. We are seeking applicants with a minimum of two years of postadmission immigration law experience in family-based petitions and visas; non-immigrant visas, including TPS, U, and T Visas; VAWAS; adjustment of status; naturalization; waivers; asylum; motions and legal memoranda as needed.This position is for 15 months with the possibility of an extension. LegalHealth partners with medical professionals in 26 hospitals and community organizations in New York City to address the non-medical needs of low-income people with serious health problems. LegalHealth complements healthcare with legal care-providing free legal services in medical facilities and training healthcare professionals to understand the legal issues their patients may encounter.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Attorneys will be responsible for providing onsite legal services at hospitals in immigration matters and with helping to implement this new initiative. In addition, attorneys will be responsible for some training of healthcare staff.

Qualifications:

LegalHealth seeks a highly committed attorneys, has two to three years of prior and relevant experience, is admitted to practice law in New York, has excellent communication skills, and has strong research and writing skills.

  • Demonstrated interest in working with low-income, disabled, and/or

disadvantaged clients;

  • Any language abilities other than English: especially Spanish,

Bengali, Haitian Creole, Russian or Chinese dialects; proficiency

level: ability to conduct a client intake interview and telephone

conversation without an interpreter;

  • Two years, post-admission, immigration law practice experience.
