Staff Attorney, Tenants' Rights Unit

Job description:

The New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG) has an immediate opening for astaff attorney in its Tenants' Rights Unit. This attorney will join a dedicated team of professionals pursuing creative and effective legal strategies to allow low-income New Yorkers to stay in their homes and communities, especially in neighborhoods experiencing rapid development and gentrification.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The attorney will carry a caseload of housing cases in court and before agencies. Matters will include nonpayment, holdover proceedings and related legal issues. The attorney will focus on Manhattan cases and will include staffing Manhattan Housing Court.

Qualifications:

  • Must be admitted to practice in New York State
  • Demonstrated commitment to public interest law and service to vulnerable populations
  • More than one year of experience litigating in NYC Housing Court
  • Excellent communication, research and writing skills
  • Prior civil legal service, clinical, fellowship and/or clerkship experience preferred.
  • Bilingual (written and spoken) ability in Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin or another prevalent language.
