About NYLAG

Founded in 1990, the New York Legal Assistance Group provides free civil legal services to low-income New Yorkers. The agency serves immigrants, seniors, the homebound, families facing foreclosure, renters facing eviction, low-income consumers, those in need of government assistance, children in need of special education, domestic violence victims, persons with disabilities, patients with chronic illness or disease, low-wage workers, low-income members of the LGBTQ community, Holocaust survivors, and others in need. The agency's annual cash budget is approximately $23 million. Serving more than 75,000 New Yorkers annually, New York Legal Assistance Group maintains a paid staff of approximately 240, supported by 1,200 pro bono attorneys and other volunteers and interns. Job description:

The attorney will work on a broad range of substantive issues, including public benefits, consumer protection, special education and immigration. Current SLU lawsuits include:M.W. v. Achievement First Crown Heights, which seeks relief for students with disabilities enrolled at a New York City charter school;Caballero v. Senior Health Partners,which challenges reductions and threats of reductions in Medicaid-funded home care services that recipients need in order to remain safely in their homes;Mayfield v. Asta Funding, which alleges that that debt buyers and their attorneys have victimized thousands of New Yorkers in a massive debt collection scheme; andSalazar v. Duncan, an action against the U.S. Department of Education on behalf of students eligible for student loan discharges. SLU is also litigating or developing potential litigation in the fields of homeless services, unlawful detention of immigrants, wrongful denial of public assistance/food stamps, and freedom of information access related to student loan discharges, relief for Superstorm Sandy victims, and other topics.

The position is funded for six monthswith the possibility of becoming permanent based on funding availability.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The attorney's responsibilities will include: developing new cases; drafting complaints, motions, and briefs; engaging in discovery, including drafting and responding to discovery requests, preparing for, taking and defending depositions, and assisting with document review; interviewing, advising, and advocating on behalf of individual class members; monitoring compliance with settlements; and participating in internal strategy discussions, negotiations with adversaries, and in-court appearances.

Qualifications:

  • Admission or application to the New York Bar is required.
  • Must have at least four years of litigation experience
