Founded in 1990, the New York Legal Assistance Group provides free civil legal services to low-income New Yorkers. The agency serves immigrants, seniors, the homebound, families facing foreclosure, renters facing eviction, low-income consumers, those in need of government assistance, children in need of special education, domestic violence victims, persons with disabilities, patients with chronic illness or disease, low-wage workers, low-income members of the LGBTQ community, Holocaust survivors, and others in need. The agency's annual cash budget is approximately $23 million. Serving more than 75,000 New Yorkers annually, New York Legal Assistance Group maintains a paid staff of approximately 240, supported by 1,200 pro bono attorneys and other volunteers and interns. Job description:

The New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG) has an immediate opening for a staff attorney in its Tenants' Rights Unit. This attorney will join a dedicated team of professionals pursuing creative and effective legal strategies to allow low-income New Yorkers to stay in their homes and communities, especially in neighborhoods experiencing rapid development and gentrification.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The attorney will carry a caseload of housing cases in court and before agencies. Matters will include nonpayment, holdover proceedings and related legal issues. The attorney's work will focus on Manhattan and will include staffing NYLAG's satellite office in Manhattan Housing Court.

Qualifications:

  • Must be admitted to practice in New York State
  • Demonstrated commitment to public interest law and service to vulnerable populations
  • More than one year of experiencing litigating in NYC Housing Court
  • Excellent communication, research and writing skills
  • Prior civil legal service, clinical, fellowship and/or clerkship experience preferred.
  • Bilingual (written and spoken) ability in Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin or another prevalent language.
