Founded in 1990, the New York Legal Assistance Group provides free civil legal services to low-income New Yorkers. The agency serves immigrants, seniors, the homebound, families facing foreclosure, renters facing eviction, low-income consumers, those in need of government assistance, children in need of special education, domestic violence victims, persons with disabilities, patients with chronic illness or disease, low-wage workers, low-income members of the LGBTQ community, Holocaust survivors, and others in need. The agency's annual cash budget is approximately $23 million. Serving more than 75,000 New Yorkers annually, the New York Legal Assistance Group maintains a paid staff of approximately 240, supported by 1,200 pro bono attorneys and other volunteers and interns. Job description:

NYLAG has an immediate opening for the position of Director of its Public Benefits Unit (PBU). The PBU Director will lead a team of approximately 25 staff members, supervisors, staff attorneys, fellows, and paralegals  practicing in multiple areas of law, including public health insurance, disability benefits, public assistance, and elder law. The Director will support the work of each practice area and pursue growth within each, as well as for PBU as a whole.

The PBU Director is a member of NYLAG's senior management team and as such also contributes to the overall management of NYLAG.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage PBU's staff of Supervising Attorneys, Staff Attorneys, Paralegals and Legal Fellows in a range of benefits-related contexts, including administrative proceedings, informal administrative advocacy, transactional work, and litigation;
  • Oversee day-to-day operations and management of PBU;
  • Monitor and enhance the provision of high quality legal representation and client services, including setting case handling priorities and strategies;
  • Hire, train and oversee all supervision and continuous professional development of PBU staff;
  • Participate in fundraising, grant writing and grant reporting as well as ensure compliance with grant obligations in collaboration with NYLAG's development team;
  • Serve as NYLAG's representative with other stakeholders, including elected officials, government agencies, community-based organizations and other advocates in similar areas of practice;
  • Participate as a member of NYLAG's senior management team;
  • Engage in, where appropriate, lobbying, public hearings, and other State and local reform efforts to improve access to benefits in areas of PBU practice on behalf of NYLAG and PBU;
  • Work on special projects as needed.

Qualifications:

  • At least 8 years relevant legal experience, including significant experience focusing on benefits work and advocacy in Federal, State, and Local administrative contexts;
  • Commitment to public interest law and to serving diverse and vulnerable populations;
  • Significant experience supervising and managing legal staff at all levels;
  • Demonstrated leadership ability;
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • Ability to work in and foster a collaborative, collegial work environment;
  • Grant writing, grant reporting and fundraising experience preferred;
  • Must be admitted to the NY State Bar.
