About NYLAG

Founded in 1990, the New York Legal Assistance Group provides free civil legal services to low-income New Yorkers. The agency serves immigrants, seniors, the homebound, families facing foreclosure, renters facing eviction, low-income consumers, those in need of government assistance, children in need of special education, domestic violence victims, persons with disabilities, patients with chronic illness or disease, low-wage workers, low-income members of the LGBTQ community, Holocaust survivors, and others in need. The agency's annual cash budget is approximately $23 million. Serving more than 75,000 New Yorkers annually, New York Legal Assistance Group maintains a paid staff of approximately 240, supported by 1,200 pro bono attorneys and other volunteers and interns. Job description:

The Matrimonial & Family Law Unit at NYLAG has an immediate opening for a staff attorney to provide comprehensive legal advocacy to domestic violence victims on orders of protection, divorce, custody, visitation, child support, spousal support, and immigration matters, including VAWA self-petitions, battered spouse waivers, and U-visas, as well as represent clients in multiple venues, including Supreme, Family, and the Integrated Domestic Violence courts in all five boroughs, Rockland and Nassau. Representation will also include advising clients on crime victim rights, the criminal justice system, and child neglect and abuse matters.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Other responsibilities include conducting and developing educational trainings for lawyers, social workers, advocates, and the community on domestic violence and their legal needs, and conduct outreach to underserved communities.The attorney will also work with and may supervise legal interns, volunteers and pro bono attorneys.

Qualifications:

  • Admission to NYS Bar required
  • 2-3 years of experience in family law
  • Fluency in Spanish is preferred
  • Experience working with survivors of trauma, immigrants and/or underserved communities is required
  • Comfortable with working with individuals of diverse backgrounds and experiences
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills
  • Excellent oral advocacy and writing skills
